What if you can’t do it all? The reality is, that nobody can do it all, so start somewhere, right?

0:11 Cybersecurity – What If I Can’t Do It All? Start Within Your Means

The most important thing is not that you’ve done every single thing. It’s that you’ve done what is in your ability to do, what is within your means to do, what you’re able to tackle and get accomplished you know, in the near term, and you will build on that over time to deliver stronger and stronger security results for your organization.

0:35 Cybersecurity – What If I Can’t Do It All?

What if you can’t do it all? In my consulting career, I have seen time and time again organizations, and individuals tasked with security, trying to get it all right, trying to do it all. I run into this at least once a month where folks are trying.

They know they have to do something. They know they have to make some meaningful security gains and they get mired down trying to get their head around all the different things they can be doing. And what I would submit to you is you really need to step back and just ask, what can I do today? Take the pressure off of yourself. Let yourself off the hook and trying to get it all right. Let yourself off the hook of trying to adhere to some best practice standard.

1:19 Cybersecurity – What If I Can’t Do It All? Steps To Start Today

What you really want to do is you want to ask yourself, what can I do today. Don’t even think in terms of maturity. Just think in terms of action. What can I do, what kind of incremental gain can I commit to today and take action on?

I can’t stress enough, I’ve actually seen multiple times that these same individuals, sometimes I talk to for a period of years. This is years of inactivity because they’ve spent years obsessing over trying to get it all right. They’ve spent years obsessing over how do I do it all.

So I have seen these same organizations come back, unfortunately, sometimes with a very nasty breach years later, and then they’re in a really uncomfortable position because typically their businesses have been brought down. And instead of implementing the right things over time, instead of taking those steps they could have taken years ago that might have prevented the breach altogether, they find themselves under the gun of trying to rapidly stand up a program, and that comes at a great financial expense.

2:20 Planning Cybersecurity

I can’t stress enough, take that pressure off of yourself. Get your mind out of the place of trying to do it all. Get your mind into the place of understanding what you can do now. Think in terms of short-term roadmaps. Don’t worry about a 36-month plan or a 24-month plan. Think about what you could do over the next six to 12 months and that will pay off.
