In my years of security consulting, one of the unfortunate circumstances I’ve come across many times are folks who are talking about security, they recognize some sort of need to start implementing security safeguards. Sometimes they understand that they need basic protections. Other times, they’re dealing with compliance challenges.

But a common theme is is they’re trying to do everything at once. They are thinking that they have to go out and roll out a complete security program, a very exhaustive security policy on day one, and they get lost in analysis. They get lost in trying to figure out how to prioritize actions and get it all accomplished.

And the unfortunate circumstance is that many times, I’ve had these conversations with folks that months later after still doing nothing are contacting me because they’ve actually been breached, especially these days with ransomware which transcends industries. The likelihood of a breach, the fact that every organization can be a target, this is more and more common.

Because of this, I tell people all the time. Don’t worry about getting it all, right? Don’t worry about what the end state needs to look like today. Don’t worry about too much planning upfront. There are things you can start doing immediately to start mitigating risk, but the important thing is is that you start doing what you can right now. Work with the resources that you have available.

Don’t worry about getting a comprehensive security policy in place. Start rolling out the directives that are going to have an immediate impact on business risk. And if you start this today, the nice thing is is that over time, you’ll see that you’ve made incremental gains, you’ll see that you’ve started to implement a security posture that’s going to allow you to withstand today’s common threats and give you a more resilient business.

To help you in this process, Secentric’s free cybersecurity starter policy has some simple directives that will allow you to understand the kinds of meaningful actions you can take today to start you on your security program journey. Check it out.
